Scoring Guidelines

  • Prior to the start of the division, the Chief Referee will set the range for the scores for that division. For example, beginner level divisions may range in scores from 6.0 to 7.0, intermediate divisions may range from 7.0 to 8.0, and advanced divisions may range from 8.0 to 9.0. Black belt and Master divisions may range from 9.0 to 10.0. These ranges are offered as a suggestion. The Chief Referee may alter the needs of the division as needed

  • Five officials will be used to score each Hyung using full point and decimal point scoring cards. Full point scores will be represented by black numbers and decimal point scores will be represented by red numbers.

  • When the competitor completes his/her Hyung, the Chief Referee will allow time for the judges to fix their score cards.

  • The Chief Referee will then direct the officials to simultaneously deliver their scores by announcing, "Judges Score."

  • One scorekeeper will read the scores out loud from left to right while the other scorekeeper records the scores. When the scorekeepers have finished recording the scores, the Chief Referee will then signal to the officials to lower their score cards simultaneously.

  • Immediately after each competitor, the scorekeepers should be calculating the score by dropping the high and the low score and adding the three middle scores together. By calculating scores in between competitors, scorekeepers will have time to double-check their calculations at the end of the division and help facilitate a faster transition between divisions.

Note:

The first competitor in each Hyung division will perform his/her Hyung twice. After completing his/her Hyung the first time, the officials will score the Hyung and the scorekeepers will announce the scores. However, the scorekeepers need not record those scores. At the end of the division, the first competitor will perform his/her Hyung again for an official score, at which time the scorekeepers will announce and record the scores for that competitor.

Two-Way Ties

  • First the scorekeepers will add in the LOW score to the three middle scores of each competitor.

  • If adding in the LOW score does not break the tie, the scorekeepers then add in the HIGH score, so that both competitors are receiving all five scores.

  • If adding in the LOW and the HIGH still does not break the tie, each competitor must perform his/her Hyung again.

  • After each competitor performs his/her Hyung the second time, the Center Referee will call both competitors into the ring, bring them to Attention, and announce, “Judges Score.” At this time all five officials will simultaneously designate by hand signal which competitor they deem the winner of the tie.

  • If the tie was for First, Second, or Third place, the winner of the tie takes the higher place and the other competitor moves to the next position. If the tie was for fourth place, the winner of the tie takes Fourth place and the other competitor is dropped.

Three-Way Ties for First Place

  • First the scorekeepers will add in the LOW score to the three middle scores of each competitor.

  • If this breaks the tie between all three competitors, the competitors should be ranked by the highest scored competitor taking First Place, and the remaining two taking Second Place and Third Place, respectively.

  • The next highest scored competitor outside of the tie will then be awarded Fourth place.

  • If adding in the LOW score only separates one competitor from the three-way tie, that competitor, depending on whether his/her score was higher or lower than the two competitors still tied, will be designated either First Place or Third Place.

  • The scorekeepers will then add in the HIGH score of the two remaining tied competitors to determine First Place and Second Place.

  • If the two competitors are still tied after adding in the HIGH score, each competitor must perform his/her Hyung again.

  • After each competitor performs his/her Hyung the second time, the Center Referee will call both competitors into the ring, bring them to Attention, and announce, “Judges Score.” At this time all five officials will simultaneously designate by hand signal which competitor they deem the winner of the tie.

Three-Way Ties for Second/Third/Fourth Place

  • In the event of a three-way tie for Second Place, the tie-breaking procedures above are to be followed with the three competitors taking Second Place, Third Place, and Fourth Place after the tie is broken.

  • In the event of a three-way tie for Third Place, the tie-breaking procedures above are to be followed with the two highest scored competitors taking Third Place and Fourth Place, with the third competitor being dropped.

  • In the event of a three-way tie for Fourth Place, the tie-breaking procedures above are to be followed with the highest scored competitor taking Fourth Place and the other two competitors being dropped.
